Menopause and aging are associated with negative changes to the brain, skeletal, cardiovascular and urogenital systems. Menopausal symptoms, most commonly hot flashes, sweating, insomnia, vaginal dryness and discomfort, significantly affect the quality of life for many women at this stage in their lives. Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is the most effective intervention for the management of these symptoms, however following the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study in 2002 use of MHT declined sharply. Review of later subgroup analysis and follow-up phase evaluation now supports use of MHT in selected menopausal women for relief of these symptoms. Non-hormonal therapies are also available, as well as over-the-counter supplements for symptom relief, and should be explored in order to fully counsel patients about all of their options.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to:

  • Determine appropriate use of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) within select patient populations.
  • Describe non-hormonal therapies for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms.
  • Discuss over-the-counter preparations menopausal patients may be taking.
